چکیده

We present results of a binary population synthesis study on the orbital period distribution of wide binary millisecond pulsars forming through four evolutionary channels. In three of the channels, the progenitor of the millisecond pulsar undergoes a common envelope phase prior to the supernova explosion which gives birth to the neutron star. In the fourth channel, the primary avoids the common-envelope phase and forms a neutron star when it ascends the asymptotic giant branch. The four formation channels yield an orbital period distribution which typically shows a short-period peak below 10 days, a long-period peak around 100 days, and a cut-off near 200 days. The agreement with the orbital period distribution of observed binary millisecond pulsars in the Galactic disk is best when the common-envelope ejection is efficient, the mass-transfer phase responsible for spinning up the pulsar is highly non-conservative, and no or moderate supernova kicks are imparted to neutron stars at birth.

Population synthesis of wide binary millisecond pulsars

Four evolutionary channels leading to the formation of wide binary millisecond pulsars are investigated. The majority of binary millisecond pulsars are found to descend from systems in which the most massive component undergoes a common-envelope phase prior to the supernova explosion leading to the birth of the neutron star. The orbital period distribution of simulated samples of wide binary mi...

Discovery of Short-period Binary Millisecond Pulsars in Four Globular Clusters

We report the discovery using the Parkes radio telescope of binary millisecond pulsars in four clusters for which no associated pulsars were previously known. The four pulsars have pulse periods lying between 3 and 6 ms. All are in circular orbits with low-mass companions and have orbital periods of a few days or less. One is in a 1.7-hour orbit with a companion of planetary mass. Another is ec...

in NGC 6760

We present orbital parameters of the 3.6 ms binary pulsar 1908+00 in the globular cluster NGC 6760. The orbital period is 3.4 hr and the mass function is 310 ?6 M , implying a minimum companion mass of 0.018 M. The companion is probably degenerate; and if it is hydrogen, it is close to overrowing its Roche lobe. The only other millisecond binary radio pulsar systems with orbital period < 10 hr ...

Spin frequency distributions of binary millisecond pulsars

Rotation-powered millisecond radio pulsars have been spun up to their present spin period by a 108 −109yr long X-ray-bright phase of accretion of matter and angular momentum in a low-to-intermediate mass binary system. Recently, the discovery of transitional pulsars that alternate cyclically between accretion and rotation-powered states on time scales of a few years or shorter, has demonstrated...

Determination of the orbital parameters of binary pulsars

We present a simple novel method for determining the orbital parameters of binary pulsars. This method works with any sort of orbital sampling, no matter how sparse, provided that information on the period derivatives is available with each measurement of the rotational period of the pulsar, and it is applicable to binary systems with nearly circular orbits. We use the technique to precisely es...
